The Shadow of God’s Wings

I remember when I was little, my Dad would always refer to me as my “mom’s shadow.” Whenever she would get up and move, I was right behind her. My Dad would jokingly say, “Here comes your shadow!” Wherever my mom was, I wanted to be. As an adult, looking back on those days, I think I just loved the feeling of safety I had around mom so it was important to me to stay close to her. 

That childhood memory recently resurfaced as I thought about how I love the verses in God’s Word that speak of His shadow. We are reminded that His shadow is a place of protection and help. In it, we can rest secure and find the peace and comfort our souls need. When we abide in God and He in us, we are kept safe. Life can be full of ups and downs, with unexpected turns and detours, but in God’s shadow we are safe from harm. Here are several verses reminding us of the security of His shadow.

Ps 63:6-7 (NIV)

On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings.

Psalm 57:1 (NIV)

Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy! I look to you for protection. I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings until the danger passes by.

Psalm 17:8 (NIV)

Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings,

Psalm 36:7 (NIV)

How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

When we stick close to the Lord our God, we position ourselves to follow as He leads and the good part is that we do not have to understand every single thing we encounter along the way.  We do not even have to always know exactly where He is taking us, because we can trust Him and rely on His unfailing love and wisdom. We just need to have surrendered hearts that receive the daily portion He gives to us.

Psalm 16:5 (NIV)

LORD, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure.
