Choose Your Words Carefully

Ephesians 4:29 NIV, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

This is a great reminder to guard our tongues! Our tongue has the power to speak life or to speak death (Proverbs 18:21). We should strive to speak life and encourage others. The way things are today, we can all benefit from giving and receiving kindness. Using our tongue for good is a sure way to show love and kindness to someone. I pray God gives us discernment to be aware of others, so we can speak life to them and help build them up. Choosing the right words can have an impact that reaches farther than we can imagine.

  1. Yes, a wonderful reminder–especially in times such as these. Proverbs speaks about a word aptly spoken being like “apples of gold in settings of silver.” Hurtful words can be so damaging! And they are not soon forgotten by those who are targeted with them. Thank you, Dawn. Your posts are always helpful and to the point. I appreciate that, because, like everyone else, my time is limited. Blessings!

    1. Great point Jeanne! The words we speak start in our heart. We have to be aware of what we meditate on. Our thoughts lead to words and actions. ❤️

  2. I listened to a podcast yesterday by Florence Littauer, author of Silver Boxes, The Gift of Encouragement. This book has been around for a few years. In the book she says our words are to be a presents wrapped in a silver bow. We are to give away silver boxes and not take them away by spouting words of belittlement or discouragement. It’s a really good book. Great post, Dawn!

  3. Yes, let us speak in a way that glorifies Jesus and our Father in heaven amen. We see a lot of people thinking gossiping or insulting people is ok it is not just the sins like drinking which GOD hates He also wants us to use our tongue for good and not for evil. Hallelujah.
