With school around the corner, my mind is shifting into βschool mode.β After reading a post by Brenda @ Becoming His Tapestry, I started thinking about our βintruder drill.β
I will always remember the first drill we practiced. The teacher sat down with the class and talked about what we needed to do if a person came into our school who wanted to hurt us. She told us our safe place was under the large semi-circle table in the corner of the room and to be very quiet so they could not find us.
At the appointed time, the Principal announced the code alerting us that an intruder was in our building. The children calmly and quietly walked to the safe place and hid under the table while the teacher and I turned off our lights, locked and barricaded the door. It is so sad that children have to worry about being safe in school and also adults in college. It is a different world than when I was a kid.

Yes itβs a different world for sure. We only had fire drills, now they have to worry about drills for shooters in the building. π’π’

I taught for 40 years. When I first started teaching, the only drill we practiced was for fire. When I finished my career, we had a myriad of necessary drills for other purposes.
I agree with writer. Yes, I would do whatever is necessary to keep my students safe.
