Too Busy?!!

I recently remembered a visit I had to a nursing home as a child. There was a lady in a wheelchair sitting in the hallway. I remember a nurse saying that it was the lady’s birthday and she told the lady to tell the little girl (me) how old she was. The lady in the wheelchair immediately became agitated, put a frown on her face and quickly said, “I’m busy, I don’t have time!”

As an adult reflecting back on that visit to the nursing home, it seems quite comical. To think, here’s a person who is now confined to a nursing home, possibly to live out her final days, sitting in her wheelchair in the hallway, yet she thought she was too busy to share how old she was. I’m guessing this lady, probably had many hectic days in her life, prior to arriving at the nursing home. Days when she felt so busy she couldn’t even catch her breath or find adequate time to rest. Over the years, she probably got really good at saying, “I’m busy!”

This memory caused me to consider my own life. It made me ask the question, “What is it that I think I am too busy to do?” And if I am too busy, “why?” Am I really too busy or are my priorities just out of order? Am I really too busy or are there just things I need to eliminate from my schedule?

Remembering my encounter with this lady many years ago, taught me a couple of lessons about life that I can understand now as an adult.

1.) Don’t allow myself to become so busy (or think I’m so busy) that I no longer have time for the simple things in life that mean so much.

2.) Make sure the things I am doing, are fruitful things that God really does intend for me to do, especially if I plan to tell someone, “I’m busy!”

Many of us can probably relate to the overwhelming feeling of being busy, especially with the world we live in today. Although we can’t change the world, we can certainly ask God to show us areas of our own lives where we have become too busy. And we can ask Him to help us prioritize according to His will, and He will guide us.

There are many things we can fill our days with to keep busy. But what is most important? And how can we best serve God and bring Him glory as we go about our daily tasks?

May God grant us wisdom and discernment as we surrender our work/tasks, goals and schedules to Him. When we surrender, He will be faithful to give us the perspective we need.

Romans 12:2 ESV, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

1 John 2:17 ESV, “And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”

Colossians 3:23-24 ESV, “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”

  1. Amen! This is a timely post for me today. In fact, I just posted on the same general topic!

No matter how busy we get, I’ve rarely, if ever heard someone say, “I’m so busy today I didn’t look at my phone once.” When was the last time someone was too busy to check their social media feeds?

Like you said, it’s about priorities.

Thank you for sharing this. It’s certainly food for thought, and you have some great scripture references.

    God Bless!

    1. You’re welcome, David! You’re right about the phones. They absorb a lot of time and attention. It’s interesting when we look around, how everyone, including myself at times, are on the phone. Setting our priorities straight is key! Glad you appreciated the scriptures. I will check out your post, thanks!

  2. Great words and a good reminder, Dawn! Many of us on Word Press must be on the same page because I wrote on this recently, too. The Holy Spirit at work! God bless your weekend!

  3. This relates to the verse I was reading today during my devotion. Mark 10. When Jesus said the kingdom belongs to people with the nature like that of children. And my spirit was telling me that this word meant that the kingdom of God belongs to people who aren’t busy like you say in this post, the kingdom of God belongs to people who have not put great dependence on the things of this world. Their hope and trust isn’t based on the things and people of this world. Dependence and trust on the things and people of this world is just like chasing after the wind. But doing the will of God leads to eternal life. Be blessed!

    1. Thank you for sharing that! We do have to let go of the things of the world that keep us from fulfilling God’s purpose and living in daily obedience to Him. Like you say, the world and what it offers will pass way, the things of God lead to eternal life. Blessings!

  4. You hit the nail on the head in my life. I know that I get caught up in being busy but so often it involves unimportant things that I need to let go, or that I need to discipline myself over. It’s a daily fight for me, so thank you for this good word today, Dawn.

    1. You’re welcome. You mentioned discipline and that is so important. I think it’s hard to be disciplined when there are so many distractions that are fighting for our time. It takes being very intentional, about prioritizing and putting God first, something God has really been dealing with me about lately. Thank you!

      1. Dawn, I thought my comment up above was deleted and I was going to try to write and send it again, but I see that it shows up as anonymous. I just wanted you to know that it’s me (Patty) at He Said What. Ha! Have a great week!

  5. Such a good reminder, Dawn. To prioritise and not be too busy to do what is actually important. I think nowadays it is so normal to say you are busy and it kind of is expected. An intentionally slower pace is not necessarily looked upon as good and wise. May God grant us wisdom to surrender our time so that we are utilising it in the best way possible.

    1. Thanks, Manu. That’s a great point that a slower pace isn’t always looked upon as something good. Therefore we sometimes may feel pressure to fill up our schedules to fit in with the more hectic way of life that has become a societal norm. 🤔 I’m praying too for wisdom and continuous surrender.

    1. Yes, too many distractions can definitely keep us away from God’s best. Even things that may seem like “good” things, may still not be His best for us. Thanks!

  6. It is easy to be too busy, but I try to take time to focus on what is really important. However, it is easy to lose focus and overdo it. Recently, I have been encouraging myself to slow down and listen like Mary rather than rushing like Martha. A great reminder, Dawn! 🌺

  8. Sometimes, I do feel as if time is running away from me. But, as you state, we must ensure that we are not too busy for the small important things in life. As the poet said, “Only what’s done for Christ will last.” Thank you for sharing this encouraging post. Blessings
