Jesus Makes Us Capable

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 NIV, “9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships,in persecutions,in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

It is human nature for us to want to be self sufficient and in control of our lives. We think we can take care of ourselves by ourselves. But the truth is that in our own strength, we are not capable. We need God’s strength to sustain us because we fall short in many ways. Even when we go through seasons that seem like we “have it all together,” one thing can suddenly happen that reminds us we need the Lord. Life can change quickly.

Paul said that He boasted about his weaknesses, because through them, He experienced the power of Jesus Christ. We often struggle to make things happen in our own strength, but when we give our life over to Jesus, day by day, one situation at a time, we will find that through His power, we become strong and capable. Even when we experience feelings of fear or uncertainty, we can find the courage to keep progressing step by step.

Do you boast about your weaknesses knowing that through them Jesus can still use you to accomplish His will? The closer I have gotten to Jesus, the more I am understanding what Paul meant. There is a freedom that comes when we begin to understand that in Christ, we don’t have to be perfect. When we humble ourselves before the Lord, He lifts us up in due time (1 Peter 5:6). Apart from Him, we can do nothing; even overcoming our weaknesses requires His help. Trust Jesus to sustain you. He loves you, even when your performance is not perfect.

  1. Such a great reminder! This is something God has been showing me, but it can be difficult to allow this truth to sink in. It’s funny in a way, because our flesh wants to be able to do it all. But on the flip side, it is also a huge relief to know that we don’t have to do it all. Jesus is our anchor and we can cling to Him! ✝️⚓️🙌

    1. Thanks Bridget. I agree it can be difficult, especially when we have to step out of our comfort zone. I’m glad too we don’t have to do it alone, He works through us. Allowing Him to use us makes this life an adventure for sure! 😁

  2. 2 Cor 12:9 one of my favorite scriptures. How vividly Father reminds me of this truth as I reflect on my life’s journey and know I could not have made it alone. In my weakness his strength is perfect . To God be the glory!!! Thank you Dawn so much.

  3. I was gently reminded by God that I was not letting go of something and giving him all the control. I did pray about it but I did not realise that I was literally trying to micromanage everything related to it.
    Such a burden lifted off when it dawned on me what I was doing. God is so patient with us. His strength is made perfect in our weakness- Amen 🙏🏽

  4. This blog is very timely, Dawn. I see so many memes going around that say, especially to women, that “you are enough!” I know what they’re trying to say but as a believer I must realize every day that the opposite is true – I am NOT enough. But Christ is! In His strength I am strong – never in my own strength. Thank you for this great encouraging word today.

  5. We don’t have to be perfect; we don’t have to have all the answers. We just need to let go of our worries and trust God. However, for me, it is much easier to say than do. 💗🌺

  6. My wife sometimes reminds me, “You don’t have be a hero to be effective.” I crave the David and Goliath moments. But what if God simply wants me to wash someone’s feet? Great strength (without wisdom) is dangerous. Ask Sampson.

  9. Indeed, life can change very quickly without warning. This pandemic is a constant reminder of this. One minute you are back to some sense of normalcy and then suddenly an upsurge and everything is chaotic. I realized that we have to be constantly at the feet of Jesus and on our knees. Great post!
