Always Be Prepared

1 Peter 3:15 NIV, “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,”

We may not always be aware, but there are people who are watching us when we claim to be a Christian. They are watching to see how we respond in certain situations. They are examining our words and our actions. In the world today, truth has become whatever people want it to be, instead of what God says it is.

Many live their lives focused mostly on their own desires, with little or no regard for the Lord. Living that way leads to hopelessness. As Christians we have the privilege to help bring hope to a dying world through Jesus Christ. We must be careful not to get caught up in the ways of the world, so that we will be an effective witness for Him.

We must also be prepared to give an answer explaining why we have placed our faith and hope in Jesus. We must be ready to explain why we love our Savior and have chosen to give our lives to Him. We must know in our hearts, what makes being a Christian different from any of the other “truths” that people believe in.

As we answer questions about our faith in Christ, we must do so with gentleness and respect. Love must be the root of our faith so that it will be what we show to others. People aren’t really impressed with how many times a week we go to church, or how many Bible verses we know. However, when we show people love through our actions, they will be more prone to believe the words that we speak, and want to know more about our Jesus, the Savior of the world.

  9. As Kingdom Citizens (Christians) we really have to stop and think about how we are representing. What we say and do affects unbelievers. We worry about what other Believers think and say about us, however, we should be concern with protecting our witness in front of unbelievers.

    In fact, what we do and say affects the unbeliever far more than it does another Believer. Meaning those who are unbelievers are looking at us to see if we act like them to justify their unbelief or non-commitment to God and the things of God. One thing I’ve come to learn is that unbelievers, they really don’t know why they believe what they believe–the things they say is out of subjectivity and not based on the scriptures. They believe it because they “feel it”, which makes it real for them but not what the Bible teaches. As Christians, we have to give to be ready to give a defense for our faith like you mentioned in your post (1 Peter 3:15). On the other hand unbelievers have no basis for what they believe as they are lost, they look at our negative behavior as a defense to deny God.

    1. Great points Kim! Thanks! That’s so true, we should make sure we are concerned about what non believers see in us versus trying to impress other Christians. Because as you mentioned, they do use our negative behavior as an excuse to deny God.

  12. You are on target about the fact that in today’s world people manufactured their own definition of truth. But there is only one truth and He is the author of truth. And yes, we have to be prepared to defend the truth. Thank you Dawn.
