He is Faithful and Just To Forgive

1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

When we confess, God forgives. It’s a simple truth, but can at times be hard for us to accept, especially when we struggle to forgive ourselves. Sins we’ve committed, rather past or present, can keep us stuck in a place of guilt and shame if we let it. Conditioning our minds to receive God’s forgiveness can take determination.

We must be determined to see ourselves through God’s eyes and understand that He is faithful to forgive us when we confess our sins to Him, no matter how big or disgraceful the sin is. Although God forgives us, there still maybe consequences we have to endure. For example, if someone steals, they may have to repay money and go to jail. If someone gets caught cheating on an exam, they may end up failing the class. But God will strengthen us as we walk through any consequences we must face. The key is to receive His forgiveness and let His love bring healing to your heart.

Remember the criminal on the cross beside Jesus in John 23:39-43. He recognized his sin, and he spoke these words…

“We are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.”

“…Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!”

And Jesus spoke these words back to him…

“…Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.”

He acknowledged that Jesus was the One who could save Him. Jesus forgave him and promised Him a home in eternity. Jesus forgave this sinner, even as he was facing death. He also forgives you and me.

We must believe what God says about forgiveness and reject the lies of the enemy. There is no condemnation in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1), so enjoy freedom from guilt and shame, and rejoice in the victory that His forgiveness brings!

  4. The one thing I love about confession and repentance is how it brings out that wonderful and sweet smelling fragrance of humility. I must admit I am a sucker for it because it is SO rare. These days I smell humility so infrequently I pine away for it. Too many lie in their pride, unwilling or unable, to expose humility, confess to sin, ‘self’ and pride, and fall in repentance. This is so sad to see for there is nobody, not a single person, who doesn’t need Jesus to bring them the cleansing they need.

    Yes indeed Dawn, we do need to reject the lies of the enemy and champion humility again so we can confess and repent before it is too late. What victory awaits those who continually live in humility, confession and repentance and make it their daily meal!

    1. As I read your post, I kept thinking about the verse, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” 1 Peter 5:6. Confession does bring humility. It takes humility to follow the Lord and obey Him. Thanks Homer!

  9. This is beautiful, Dawn ❤️. I heard today that in order to “master the art of the start”, we have to master the art of failing – which is, essentially, forgive yourself and move forward. Because of the price He paid we are redeemed. When we have confidence and faith in Him to forgive, and to come from a place of love, we truly have a greater capability to progress.

    1. Thanks Jenny! I like that quote. There are many things we can learn from our failures. Receiving God’s forgiveness and forgiving others has to be an ongoing part of life. ❤️

  14. Amen your writing is on point. Even though we know that when we confess our sins to God we are forgiven, the enemy will bring up old sins and try to convince us that we are not forgiven. Congratulations and blessings on all your new endeavors.

  15. Praise God. There is no condemnation in Christ Jesus. The example of the thief on the cross clearly shows us that when God forgives, He does not condemn. As you said we have to see ourselves as God sees us. Thank you, Dawn for reminding us of God’s faithfulness.
