Alcohol and the Christian. Can we drink? Is it a sin to drink? The Bible doesn’t teach that If someone has a glass of wine or alcohol that it’s a sin. Jesus drank wine and he was sinless so that’s conformation that’s it’s not a sin. This article hasn’t been formed to condemn anyone who drinks but to educate ourselves in his way through his word and the renewing of our minds. Romans 12:2 NLT “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know Gods will for you, which is good pleasing and perfect.” I was torn on the subject until I investigated alcohol a litter deeper than just a surface study.

Great post! Thank you for sharing. While some people drink in the name of “grace”, they forget that other Christians have tendencies for alcoholism or a family history of alcoholism and their choices can impact others who may not be spiritually grounded like they are. We should be selfless in our choices and think about our influence on others.

That’s a great point! It doesn’t appear that many Christians who choose to drink really care about others around them who may be struggling. My Dad struggled with alcoholism and also many in his family, so I choose not to drink. I feel it’s God’s protection for me against falling into the alcoholism trap. I just ask Him for continued grace to stand strong.

If God hasn’t given you a personal conviction about drinking wine then you can. But the Bible says not to get drunk on it.
Ephesians 5:18 NIV, “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,”
I also like what Temi mentioned in the comments to be aware of others who may struggle in some way with alcoholism. You don’t want to hinder them.
1 Corinthians 8:9 NIV, “Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak.”

I’ve never had a drink of alcohol my whole life, never something that had any appeal. But like with anything, it becomes a sin when we over do it, or make have control over us! A nice topic to share!

Oh well. I don’t like this kind of discussion. It’s not about how alcohol is made. It’s not about how much profits the corporations make. (I can also make beer and wine myself.) As a Christian I can drink alcohol. Jesus did it. Paul recommended it for medical reasons. But. And that’s the important point for me as a Christian. I can drink. I don’t have to drink. I can do without. I can fast. Advent is also a time of Lent. And so I give up alcohol in these four weeks. I myself am active in a spiritual welfare network. We work according to the 12 steps. And so I can do without if I am dealing with people with alcohol. And I worked as a social worker with students from a school. As a Christian association, we considered whether we should ban alcohol from the outset. We decided against it. We wanted to show the students how to handle alcohol well. A general ban is not helpful. When they come from a parental home where alcohol abuse occurs. And then they meet Christians who reject alcohol. Where should they learn to use alcohol well?

Because of my Christian convictions, I personally do not drink alcohol. I have experienced first hand the effects it can have on children who live in a home where alcohol is consumed. There are many arguments for and against whether or not a Christian should drink alcohol. My biggest question is, “Why”? Thank you for sharing!

For some people who choose to drink, they often like to use that event of the sacrament to ease some guilt about drinking. “But Jesus Christ drank wine!?” They say. Yes, that’s what he chose. But He was not a drunk neither did He give the gate way to abuse.
This generation has taken lightly to the cup of wine. There is sin when we take no accountability to self-control of the alcohol that we allow in our diet. We want to be receptive to the holy ghost, we want to be “aware” of our surroundings, places and people.
It is in our *wisdom that we must recognize what substances and foods we should and should not use to maintain the health (both spiritual and universal) of our bodies.
Today in our latter-day revelation we are granted water to drink instead of alcohol. Jesus Christ ask responsibility from us; limits, restrictions and moderation of what the world offers. As Apostle Paul writes to the Corinthians: “What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

Hello Darcy! Christmas was nice! Hope yours was too! You made good points, also the wine Jesus drank was not strong like the alcohol of today. So today those who drink must be very careful. As Christians, we definitely must be mindful of how we treat our bodies because God’s Spirit does live within. We need to be high on Him, not alcohol. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
