Staying True To Commitments

1 Kings 8:61 NIV, “And may your hearts be fully committed to the LORD our God, to live by his decrees and obey his commands, as at this time.”

Yesterday at church the pastor discussed the importance of being committed to Christ. We should be committed to obeying His Word by applying it to our daily lives. We should also represent Christ by staying true to the commitments we make to other people. We should make a habit of following through when we give our word that we will do something for someone. Being committed is a reflection of who we are in Christ.

A couple of years ago, I signed up at church to host a small six week bible study in my home. Although initially nine people signed up, there were about four who were committed to attending every week. I was grateful for those who followed through and faithfully showed up. I remember feeling disappointed about the ones who didn’t come.

About half way through the study, a tenth person signed up. However, she never showed up and never responded to my emails. On week six, the final week, only three people showed up. So I wasn’t able to say my final goodbyes or give them all the little gifts I had for them. I’ve always considered myself to be pretty committed, however this experience reinforced the importance of commitment in my heart.

Sometimes in life things happen beyond our control and we have to change our plans, and that’s understandable. But in general as Christians, we should be people that others can rely on to be honest and loyal, dependable and trustworthy.

I’m asking God to help me to be a woman of my word who follows through on her commitments, so that I will represent Jesus well. His light should shine through our actions, because people are watching us even when we don’t think they are.

  1. Good post. We have to be people of our word and follow through. As representatives of Christ what does it say of us if we do not.
    Whenever I need help for something at church it is quite hard to get people to commit to something.

  3. What a wonderful post my sister! This is so true. I couldn’t agree more with you because my husband always tell me I’m a man of my word when I say I’m going to do something I’m going to do it because I made that commitment to do it.. so after reading your post… I’m going to have to stay committed to things I commit to… I sometimes get easily distracted but that’s something I’m going to have to pray about in our it in God’s hands… Thanks once again Dawn for this wonderful post… God bless you sister! ❤️

  4. Can you imagine if Christ flaked on His commitment to us? How awful that would be!? You are right, we must remain committed to things, especially when our emotions to renege begin popping up and telling us to slack off. One of the ways I practice this is by having people who speak truth into my life and hold me accountable because I know myself and I look for “easy” way outs if at all possible, especially when it comes to getting on that bike or going for a walk 🤫

It is simple yet important message Jesus gave us as his followers when he said, “But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.” Only say yes to something if we know we will follow through. It is okay to say no if we know we cannot follow through.We should think seriously before committing. If we know we cannot follow through, it is okay to say no thank you.

    1. I was reading that verse recently. It’s so true. I love it when Jesus speaks. I think what you mentioned here is key…“It’s ok to say no thank you”. Feeling pressure to say yes, can cause people to over commit.

      2. When I joined my Life Group at church, I was honest with them and told them I will have scheduling conflicts at times on Sunday afternoons due to cultural events. I also shared with them that if fatigue hits me I might miss.

  6. well this post is a convicting one for me

    as one who is regularly late and not so great at following thru with commitments, i unfortunately cannot quite relate to your great disciplined ability

    it is very admirable

    keep up the home studies

    whoever shows up were meant to be there

    remember, even if 1 person attends and receives the Word in their heart, it was meant to be, and worth it all

    i believe i had heard a story about when a man had been the lone person to have gotten saved at a ministry once

    but lo and behold, that one man was none other than Warren Wiersbe, who has written many expository teachings on the Bible

    1. Convictions come to make us better. 😊 My issue is procrastination but that’s another whole post lol. You’re right, even if only one person was there it was worth it. God can use that one person greatly. That’s a great story. I actually have not done any home studies since but hope to do them again in the future. Have a great day too. ❤️

  9. Yes, amen. I was just saying to my husband the other night as I read someone’s blog, I gave my word I’d read and comment on her blog. Now I have to be a woman of my word and do it. I am big on that too. 😊 Thanks for sharing. In a crazy world where often anything goes, it’s nice to know their are still strong people of faith in the world.

  10. I’ve been studying the Word of God for over 30 years. When I first started, I wasn’t very consistent, but I kept at it! Now that I am a teacher, I tell my class to be persistent and the consistency will come. ✝️

      1. I still remember my first Bible study. It was a 12-week Precept Bible study on the book of Daniel. I think I lasted 5! Twelve weeks and a book in the OT is a long commitment for a beginner, but I didn’t give up. God created a hunger in my heart for His Word, so I kept coming to the table.💚

  14. God brings us strength, but also wisdom. As you write, staying true to commitments is a worthy goal for anyone. I think of a wise expression heard years ago at a high school commencement, “Promise less, deliver more.”

  15. I can’t agree less sis. If truly we are our father’s (God) son or daughter who says He is “I am that I am” – He is who He says He is!. Then we can’t be less than that – men and women of Integrity (our yes is yes and No is no).

    And reading a verse in Matthew this morning reminds me of this that He expects us to say our Yes for what it is – Yes and No for what it is – No.

    “But let your statement be, ‘Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’ [a firm yes or no]; anything more than that comes from the evil one.”
