From my own personal experiences, I can definitely say that the closer I have gotten to Christ, the more I have learned about receiving and showing God’s love. When our hearts are open to receiving His love, His Holy Spirit works in us to heal us from any brokenness and pain we have. He completes us and makes our hearts whole. It is a process, but as God heals us, we will have a desire to share His love and healing with others, because of what He has done for us.
1 John 3:18 GNT, “My children, our love should not be just words and talk; it must be true love, which shows itself in action.”
At a church I attended in the past, there was a ministry called, “The Prison Letter Ministry”. You could volunteer to write letters of encouragement to inmates. The commitment was for one year. So I decided to sign up, and shortly after, I was assigned an inmate. Her name was Sherry. You could use the church address and any name you wanted while writing, but I just stuck with my name Dawn.
We were told from the beginning that we may not receive return letters depending on the inmates situation. So although I wasn’t getting any responses from Sherry, I looked forward to sending her letters and cards of encouragement. I wrote her for six months, before being told she had been released from prison.
Shortly after Sherry’s release, I was excited to receive a card at the church from her. She thanked me for diligently sending her letters and cards and said she was really encouraged by them. She apologized for not being able to write back while in prison, and told me she had been incarcerated for seven years.
I don’t know where Sherry is today, but I pray God is continuing to work in her life. When we are willing to be vessels for Jesus, we never know how He will use us to show love to others. I’m thankful I had the chance to help Sherry understand how much God loves her. I always realized that I could have been the one locked in the cell instead of her. But by God’s grace, I was one of the people who had the privilege of offering her support.
I still have the card Sherry sent me. Through her card, God also showed His love to me. Please say a prayer for Sherry, that God will continue to work in her life and bring her healing. Please also pray that God will bring the right opportunities her way. It’s very difficult for people who have been in prison once they are released.
1 John 4:7 NLT, “Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God.”

Father, we just want to say how much we appreciate You today. Thank You for being the perfect example of love in Your sacrifice of Your Only Son Jesus Christ, our Messiah and the Spotless Lamb. Thank You for His example which reminds us to love the poor, the less fortunate, those held in bondage and shackled in chains. So easy Lord it is easy to neglect them and go about our business. Today Father, we lift Sherry to You and ask that You would visit her wherever she is. Send her Your peace and joy we pray. We ask Lord that You would provide her with an opportunity to receive Your goodness and to feel Your favor. Father, we ask that You would choose for Sherry a path of righteousness and grant her the grace and strength to walk therein. May she be filled with Your courage to resist temptations to lure her away from the chosen path. Father, minister to Sherry even now and remind her that with You, life is worth living. In You, she can have hope eternal. Love on Sherry tremendously we pray. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Thanks so much Deandra! I can feel your prayers all the way here in Virginia (at my family reunion this weekend). I know that our Lord has heard this prayer and that Sherry will feel them too as God works in her life. God bless you always little sister. 😊❤️

Dawn, your post today hit home. I know through personal experience, how much cards, letters, and visits mean to an inmate because my husband is serving time. Thank you for showing God’s love to one in prison. I will pray for Sherry. May God bless you as you continue to bless others.
