One Day at a Time

Matthew 6:34 NIV, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

My mom always uses the phrase, “one day at a time”. Thanks to her, it’s one of my favorite phrases too. According to this verse in Matthew, “one day at a time” is all we really can handle. God didn’t intend for us to carry tomorrow’s troubles today.

I remember when the Israelites tried to hoard the manna/bread, after the Lord instructed them to only gather what they needed for the day (Exodus 16). The extra manna/bread they kept spoiled and smelled really bad.

This reminds me of how it is when we carry tomorrow’s worries today. The extra stress will cause us to be less effective, drained and unhappy. It will spoil our outlook if we let it. We’d like to know the details of tomorrow, next week, next month, and next year! However we must be content with God’s provision for today.

We must take one day at a time and trust God to give us our daily bread. I pray God will give you peace of mind, strength and hope for today.

  1. To confront worry and anxiety we seek God. We put God first and we move from worry to faith. This is how we live by faith instead of becoming overly worried about the future.

Matthew 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

If you are overcome with worry, that is a sure indicator that you are not doing well in the faith department.

Lord help me to take it one day at time.

  2. A very good post, Dawn! I think most people struggle with worry. It’s sometimes hard to take our eyes off the circumstance and put them on God, but there again, one day at a time, Jesus!!! 🙌🙏 Thanks for the reminder!

  3. So true Renee, so many of us struggle with worry but the true is worry and fear do not produce results but keep you in the same cycle. Worry will never accomplish anything other than add stress and fear to your life. When you worry you are believing in your present situation rather than believing in God. It means you are making your challenges and the things you are going through control your life.

When you worry about the unknown you are actually sabotaging the present. The Bible continues to tell us not to worry about nothing but in all things give thanks. When we give thanks even in the midst of our trials and tribulations we are actually acknowledging God and having faith in the power of the almighty God.

Worry and Faith cannot dwell in the same house.
